MemCave - Color Fire

Band / Artist: MemCave
Year: 2014
Genre: Electronic, IDM, Chillstep, Breakbeat

My Review:
During a period where I was halfway involved with the blog, I got a message from Kansas City based producer and DJ Keith Rich, otherwise known as MemCave, who I have posted here before. He gave me a copy of a soon-to-be-released album, Color Fire. I wanted to post it, but with everything going on, I didn't get to it for so long, that I couldn't justify trying to post the link to download while he was selling the album on bandcamp.

So fast-forwarding to now, I was going back and revisiting artists, and saw that he released the album under a Name-your-price setting, and since it has been a number of years, I feel okay in sharing it with people.

I listened to this album in the car for a really long time, and I am glad to share it with people. I was really down on myself for not sharing it before when I had the chance, so I hope you all enjoy it. There are these great repeating beat sets, with all this lush flourishing warm noise surrounding it and emotional melodies.

I strongly encourage you to give this a listen. And if you see this MemCave, I'm glad I got to share this one for you finally.

Eric Pietras - All This And More Than A Brother

Band / Artist: Eric Pietras
Year: 2015
Genre: Ambient, Electronic, Soundscape, IDM, Minimal

My Review:
This one is a good relaxing Soundscape/IDM album, with a ton of emotional growth in the songs. The description says some songs "are worlds unto themselves, inviting the listener to explore new vistas emerging from sonic fog", and I'd be inclined to agree.

I laid back and listened to this one this morning while coming to terms with being awake. It was a nice way to be peaceful. The artists description was this;

Eric Pietras is a scientist, photographer and musician from the San Francisco Bay Area. He also presents a weekly ambient/experimental internet radio show entitled 'Sounds In The Dark' at BFF.fm.

Sounds like my new best friend.

Aphex Twin - All user18081971 Soundcloud Tracks

Band / Artist: Aphex Twin
Year: 2015
Genre: IDM, Braindance

My Review:
So I was enjoying the tracks from the User18081971 account and noticed that many tracks had disappeared. I was kind of bummed out and figured id find somewhere they'd be streaming. little did I expect to get this.

I got to see him play live for the first time in a decade at the Day For Night festival in December, and so I've been on a kick since then. (I'm going to Day For Night again for sure. It was absolutely amazing. Who wants to meet up there?)

Anyway, here are about 280 tracks from Aphex Twin, in an easy to listen to or download format, and they were all freely downloadable before off of SoundCloud,

Band / Artist: Kinskop
Year: 2010
Genre:Downtempo, IDM, Ambient Techno, Electroacoustic

My Review:
THE ARTIST FORMERLY KNOWN AS LOOM. They are coming from The Various Vegetables Label,  which is pretty freaking spiffy. I love me some good electronic stuff.

This is the most mellow album I'd imagine from Loom. Or Kinskop as they are now known. Its pleasantly made. If you've enjoyed Bitbasic (Meek, or Leonard), Loom, MemCave, or Yarn, you'll likely enjoy this one a lot.

Bitbasic - Leonard

Band / Artist: Bitbasic
Year: 2009
Genre: IDM, Electronica, Shoegaze, Ambient Techno

My Review:
He brought you Meek, and I liked it, so I'll just pretend that you did too.

This one has some similarities, and keeps his sense of style, but is an obviously different approach to making an album. He made the whole thing in one month. ONE. I'm very impressed. Its so polished, and has so many good parts. I like to think of it as easy listening for the weirdos and people who get bored by easy listening.

I hope you get a kick out of this one. Bitbasic is London-based electronica artist Simon Haycock. I'm hoping that one day I get to chat with this fellow.

Enjoy!

Microbit Project - White Deaf Cat

Band / Artist: Microbit Project
Year: Recorded 2012, Released 2014
Genre: Ambient Techno, Lo-Fi, IDM

My Review:
A sweet, soft, Lo-Fi album of chiptuney IDM type stuff. it has a lot of synth Theramin sounds. Its very melodic, and leaves you in a peaceful place overall. The label released a long post with the album, so here it is.

Microbit Project is a music project by EugenKha.
One of the most creative melodic music producers among poets, and audio explores that puts Russia high up on the underground map of prettiness!

He debuts a very beautiful release on L0bit, delivering all round electronic sweetness. It's something that you will like when you are into good friendly vibes,  that put 'easy listening' way up to to the forefront.

an album about a pretty 'White Deaf Cat' celebrated with lovable melodies, petite cuteness and friendly vibes. Something so adorable that you might scratch your head how on earth this release could be delivered for free! But that was written in the will of the deaf white cat, that this music would be out there for everyone to enjoy, to be cherished and loved!

And for sure this release is all about love! every note you hear, perfectly captured in this ultra friendly sound. These cute music lines that makes you feel like stroking the soft fur of a white deaf cat. It's of grotesque beauty and yet so microscopic small that it will fit in your smallest pocket.

The release comes with two remixes for everyone who just can't get enough of this album! And L0bit assures you, you can't get enough of this album!
Alright, well, go enjoy.

Weerthof - Out Of Control

Band / Artist: Weerthof
Year: 2013
Genre:IDM, Modern Classical, Folktronic, Glitch

I used to wander around the net and find out of the blue record labels to follow. I just so happened to be checking one of them on prep for my trip to DC, and found this guy from the Netherlands, Michael Van Der Weerthof.. He calls himself a songsmith, which makes sense. His website is here.
http://www.michielvandeweerthof.nl/
He also has an extensive resume on his site, so you know, if you want someone to make music for a videogame on par with katamari damacy, you should totally give him a call.

You will start this album feeling like its going to be very gentle and melodic...  And then it jumps on your table and bounces up and down for a minute, Stops, then calmly sits down, cocks its head to the side, and begins making strange music while starting at you.

It is very glitchy, wiggly music. Which reminds me of plenty of IDM bands I've enjoyed. It is a pretty Pleasant overall experience, barring the spazzy bit right at the outset. Also, you should know that physical copies of this album are available,.. in special usb sticks in the middle of scented bars of soap.

New Dehli FM - Daylight confusion

Band / Artist: New Delhi FM
Year: 2005
Genre:Illbient, IDM, Ambient, Chillout

My Review:
A great album of Illbient, a darker, more triphoppy ambient techno. If you put "Music is for children" (from Boards of Canada), and "i care because you do" (from Aphex Twin) in a mix with this, you'd hardly know which was which. I'm really enjoying it, though I feel like it needs more quirk in places to keep it from getting too vanilla.

New Dehli FM is an artist from Stuttgart in 2001, made by Sandro Böge. He has some really interesting ideas on IDM and what it should represent. Apparently he has some really awesome live sets.

Loom - Coffee For The Kids

Band / Artist: Loom
Year: 2009
Genre: IDM, Acid House, Illbient, Glitch

My Review:
This reminds me strongly of Mouse on Mars and Garren Epley, with the quirky beats, "jazzy" mood, and mangled, goofy bouncing rhythms. I've been holding onto it for as long as it has been out, and I still love getting the chance to play it on a roadtrip or while walking around town.

The guy, now playing music as Kinskop, was a part of a group called Various Vegetables Crew, which has a ton of interesting acts on it. His stuff now is evolved into something much different, which i'll likely share in the future. You can check the group out here.

http://www.various-vegetables.org/

I'll leave this one a little sparse, just sharing what this album was originally released with.

Loom's second album is a childish little bastard.
Just turn on your Fisher Price Cassette-Recorder and let your mind wander to the first time you played with fire. Or when you swiped your little brother's matchbox cars. It's all hidden between the stumbling beats and the squeaky little melodys. And remember: you don't have to like this music, you have to nurture it!
Don't let it cock a snook at you!

Bitbasic - Meek

Band / Artist: Bitbasic
Year: 2012
Genre: Nu Breaks, IDM, Glitch, Electronica, Jungle, Breakbeat, Future Garage

My Review:
Name; Simon Haycock. Location; London. Skill; Electronica?

This is a gem in the IDM, , whatever-you-say kind of electronica world. I've referenced the album "Family Glue" by Global Goon before, and this is an album that feels like it is on par with that same bubbly, playful, groovy feel. Some moments have that kind of skill that Beck was notorious for, taking bunches of noise, and making it into something completely different.

Its one part of Jazz and Funk, shaken over frozen Jungle, and then poured in a Glitch glass with some fresh IDM squeezed over the top... I need better analogies.

Here is his fabecook. He posts regularly from it.

Garren Epley - ...Ellipses EP

Band / Artist: Garren Epley

Year: 2012
Genre: Alternative Hip-Hop, Experimental, IDM, Lo-fi, Rap

My Review:
I'd call this Hip Hop, but its got the kind of feel that IDM had back in the days of “Braindance”. This feels like a stripped down version of Family Glue from Global Goon, with this humble Hip Hop style laid out and then added to with layers of sampling and warping. It has some really catchy moments, but i thought that the usage of the little digital track naming voice in each track was kind of throwing off my groove.

This album is hosted by Oligopolist Records, a sponsor with a really cool business model. They avoid Itunes and most other indie labels, and host themselves, giving most of their money to the artists. Check them out here.

Special post; "Dreamcatcher - Poolsides" & "෴ - Lichen EP"

Band / Artist: Dreamcatcher
Year: 2012
Genre: IDM, Chillstep, Chillout

My Review:
This was a pleasant surprise, and something a little out of the ordinary. I got an email around crimmastime from a musician asking for a little more than the average share. Namely this line stood out from his message.
"It would mean a lot to me if you could make a review of it so I would get some information about what I should do better next time."
He asked for it. So here is his soundcloud page.

https://soundcloud.com/dreamcatcherdream

And here's the link to Lichen, where I'll be reviewing Poolsides more than anything.

http://lichen.bandcamp.com/album/lichen-ep

Jumbly Music: the Lichen EP, is that something you're very involved in? Also, how the fuck are you supposed to pronounce that symbol? Mustache? Squiggle? Fuzzy Caterpillar?

Simon Aleksič: So yeah, with the Lichen EP, me and my friend both made three songs each so in the first place, there were six tracks on it, but one of my songs had to be removed because of a sample issue. So actually, the second and the fourth tracks are mine from that thing. We don't really make music together any more because my friend is now more into metro-ko or whatever that new thing is and that's not my thing. It is pronounced Lichen.

Jumbly: Metro-ko... I have absolutely no idea what that is. Sounds like google time for me. How long have you been making music for?
Simon: I've been making music for two years.
Jumbly: How did you get into it? Did you start out in a different genre?

Simon:
I started just to try out something new but it grew on me. I was practicing breakdance when I was younger (though I didn't stop dancing, I just don't have as much time) and that was the thing that helped me express my feelings. Since I am making music, this is how I express my emotions.

Jumbly:
Can you play any other instruments?

Simon: I am self-learning guitar playing at the moment and I can play piano (my mother taught me when I was younger) but I'm very clumsy at it, I can read notes and all but it takes a long time for me to figure out which key I have to press, I never actually felt interested into physical instruments although this sounds weird.

Jumbly:
Not too weird to me, when its in the right setting. What way would you like your music to be enjoyed?

Simon: I would really like my music to be enjoyed as background music or as music for relaxation, to take it easy, to listen to it on a sunny day with no worries.

Jumbly:
How would you describe your music in your own words?

Simon: 2 oz. Downtempo,2 oz. Tropical beats, 1 oz. Keys, A slice of phased and pitch shifted vocals,
On the glitches, shaken, served in a highball glass.

Jumbly: Lol. What kind of software and hardware are you using?

Simon: I'm using Ableton and numerous VSTs but mostly the Tyrell N6 and the dBlue Glitch.

Jumbly: Would you like to make songs meant to fit into albums, or would you rather have songs meant to be released separately (like how soundcloud kind of is.)?

Simon: I'd rather have my songs fit into albums because when I decide I will start working for something new, I usually create a picture of what I would like to show with my music first. With my first EP, I imagined that it should represent the feelings of summer (I am a total summer guy, I don't like winters) and it's the same with the new thing I'm working on. I want to make it sound as if someone would take the sounds of the African savanna, Brazilian cities and add sounds of reverb-full strings, making it a bit more ambiental. So expect a lot of different sounds mixed together into a new thing that sounds connected even though at first it might not sound like it could be.

Jumbly: What kinds of music most inspire you?

Simon: Ambiental, downtempo and the oldschool breakbeat (not the new 4000 bpm hardcore) music but from time to time, even a rock track can inspire me to try out a new thing and see how it goes.

Jumbly: Have you perused the blog much? Any favorite posts? Any suggestions for it?

Simon: Yes, I have been on your blog a few times and it seems very nice to me. I like the structure of your reviews and I really like that you even make interviews. Just keep doing what you do.

Jumbly: any other bands or blogs you'd suggest?

Simon: An artist I would suggest is Subdaio (http://subdaio.bandcamp.com/). He really can create a nice atmosphere and he has a bit more sounds on his soundcloud. I sadly don't know any other good independent music blogs ...

Jumbly: I'm gonna have to check them out soon.

So, last thing.. do you want a serious critique? Would you like it public or private? I went to art school and spent a year doing sound design, so I can give a pretty emotionally detached teardown of the whole thing if you'd like. I just wasn't sure if you wanted a real review of its strengths and weaknesses, or just wanted me to do a post of your work and were being polite.

Simon: I want a serious critique because only that will help me get better. If you wish, you can make it public, I wouldn't have any problems with that.

Alright, Now onto the review. It is not short.

I'll preface this by saying that this sounds harsh in some ways, but the album isn't bad. I'm personally keeping it, although I'm really looking forward to hearing the next one that comes out.

My biggest problem here is that I was trying so hard to take the contexts of what you were saying about your sound and how you'd like it to be experienced, that I almost ruined it for myself. Seeing as the music is all digital, I was really trying to dissect it and get at exactly where it stands in the world of electronic music, and some of the best places for it to go. I'll just break it down very briefly and then go from there.

Rain - your use of pads and overarching emotional notes are pretty grand, though it does feel a little weird that this song clocks in at over 8 minutes when the rest of the album cant even hit half that length. It played for long enough that it made the rest of the album seem like it skipped by afterward, and dragged too long out of the gate, which is usually best reserved for those sorts of tracks that really grab ahold of your attention. I like the drums looping overall, but they need to be lightened and strengthened in places as opposed to just being the same straight through.

Pleiades Pattern
- the voice samples are a good idea, but I feel like you fumbled it this time. They take away from the lighter tone of the song in some ways, and the drums are either on, or off, which seems a little bit of a shame, because if you were to play with some modulation switches you'd be able to vary its sound and softness a little more throughout the track instead of feeling caustic against the other sounds.

Highway - works as a good intermission. Good use of the drums and all in this track, just a simple 2 beat works well, and the vocal bits fit really nicely along this one. If this were a longer album, it would fit in place better.

A Novel for Printers in 5/8 - this might have been the perfect track to swap with rain as far as placement on the album. That set of keys starting at 45 seconds is a nice set. I cant tell if the minimalism with the beat was meant to be so repetitive. It feels like an accident that you made work out in your favor by layering for a while, but it still starts to get a little grating with some layers toward the 2:20s area, and i didn't really know what to think of the vocal sample used, it worked alright.
Easyboard - the Microhouse sound you have going on here, could do you favors as a nice additive layer or percussion replacement in the future. It works a lot better in some ways than the drum tracks for most of the rest of this album. This and the track after it are the strongest on the album to me.
Pleiades Pattern Reprise - good usage of the slow fade-in and the reverb usage on the beginning drums. The vocal sample here is the strongest in the album. It still leaves something to be missed, but I think that a chillout second half to this, and a softer fade-in on track one would make it balance on the replay.
Now, as a whole I'd say this is a fairly promising freshman album. It has its flaws, but none bad enough that it stopped the album from being enjoyable. The biggest thing is needing a more fluid album next time through. Try not to have any songs more than twice the length of all other tracks on the album, even if that just means making a longer wind down on the end, or unless that song needs to be that way for the sake of what you're making. Another thing I would say is that if you want a good mid-ground between the headspace albums and the soft background albums, use processed samples like field recordings, droney bits, recordings of you and your friends just humming tunes, birds chirping.. whatever you can find or record and hammer to pieces until you love it. Then it's yours, and you're sharing a piece of you and your life in your art.

Some styles you should look to for some possible inspiration would be:
Microhouse or Deep techno, for its lightness and super compressed and quirky percussives.

Minimal trance, its really pleasant for the stripped down sound, similar to what you seem like you're approaching in your work here.

Dub techno, same thing, but more tied to the reverb and echo effects. More of this for some tracks maybe? Good for building out as a soundscape.

Hyperdub, 2-step, UK garage, It can be a good way to approach some of the more simple 2 or 3 hit beat sets you were playing around with. Burial is a good one to listen to some. But you really could go all the way back to the initial “Dub House” era for ideas of where to consider going.

Glitch and IDM, because sometimes nothing is more relaxing than a light layer of weird with your track layouts. You can experiment in all kinds of ways, and really make some interesting things happen.
Krautrock & Spacerock, you want to keep the percussion louder, but make something magical? Just remember “tomorrow never knows” by the beatles, and all the rest of this genre. Why not just sample the shit out of some rock and acoustic songs and chop it up to make a rhythm that you can love, just layer things so your electronic pieces compliment the percussion, and you're set for something really promising. Just imagine what you could do with some Dreampop or Shoegaze tracks.
Abstract hiphop, You want relaxing backgrounds that are lively or have flavor? This shit is the way to go when you want a little funk to rise up on your album. Dj food, Bonobo, it just has the perfect swank, like a film score for your hot stoned sex life.

Ambient Techno & Ambient House, You can make this stuff go for SO LONG and it can just WORK. If i were on a beach and drinking a beer and relaxing, I'd listen to a lot of this stuff. Also it lends itself toward the last one..

Ambient psy (Psytrance on valium), Now personally, if you were gonna take one piece of my advice over all else, I would tell you to really immerse yourself in this stuff, in getting how it works, and making your own play on some of it just to see where it could take you. This style of music floats up out of the Psytrance and Goa movement every once in a while, and it makes for some of the most comfortable and groovy tracks to me. An important thing that it has going for it, is that psytrance is so much about the builds and releases, only so they can rebuild again, which would be a great strength to build up on your return album.
Its pretty much a lost era of the music world too, so you can make it your own thing fairly easily.

I hope that helps you out, but in case, Anyone listening to this, please feel free to post a review in the comments.

Andrew Lagowski, Hellscion, NovA17

Band / Artist: Andrew Lagowski, Hellscion, NovA17
Year: 1995, 2012, 2012
Genre: Techno, Industrial, Hardcore Techno, Trip Hop, Breaks, Electro, Dark, Ambient, Dark Ambient, Film Score, IDM

My Review:
So I had hoped to have a really special exclusive to offer today, but that didn't really come together like I was hoping. BUT I WAS PREPARED. Instead I'm serving up 3 different flavors of dark electronic goodness.

Andrew Lagowski

Dark techno is what I'd like to find a lot more of. Like, REALLY dark. This one is well on its way there. It has these nice buildups, that slip back into a murky subdued sound of ominous ambient. I was enjoying the plays on build and release that is common in techno. Sadly its only available on heere as a Lo-fi format.

Apparently this album was even reviewed in Wired back when it came out. Good on ya.

Andrew Lagowski – Prismatic ()

Hellscion

This is his 4th release, and he's getting better and rougher every time. This one is right on the edge of EBM, and i really wish there was a vocalist growling out some great lyrics across the top of this, I dunno, something about hell and bondage or something. Either way, its dark and gritty.

Hellscion - Burning Bridges

NovA17

This one is some nice hip-hop beats, edging on horrorcore beats. An interesting instrumental album with a really dark edge to it, biting horror scores and dark ambience from horror, only to hack them up and loop them into the beats. This is the most chill of the posts today. It comes off like the little brother of "Genocide Memoria" from LFO Demon.

NovA17 - FFUNS [darkhiphop instrumental]

Alright. Enjoy another night of fright and horror.

Lastrapink - Portals

Band/Artist: Lastrapink
Year: 2009
Genre: IDM, Acid, Dubstep, Chillstep, Electro, Breaks

My Review:
This album is nice for all the reasons I love IDM. Its unnassuming, quirky, inventive, and humble in what it presents, a simple album for you to listen to and enjoy. No grandeur, no overcomplicating the beats. It brings a unique flavors and approaches to the fold, but you could just as easily ignore that and enjoy a simple jam session.

So just to give the in depth review of it, I'd say this. An album grabbing up the old flag of Acid IDM from the mid 00's (Such as some modern AFX albums) and blending it with the structural layout of more chill breakbeat tracks. The artists wasn't satisfied to leave it there, taking the chances with elements of dubstep, dub, drum n bass, more emotive ambient, and some tech house as a way to cohesively bring all of the album progressively along its path.

A good album to relate this to would be "Wicklow house" by Vertical67. I always feel like I'm referencing that one. Either way, give this one a listen.

The Ghost Of 3.13 - The World Isn't Here

Band / Artist: The Ghost Of 3.13
Year: 2012
Genre: ambient, modern-classical, IDM, glitch, breakcore

My Review:

The 26 year old Romanian dude making this music definitely know how to play around with his breaks, creatively and emotively. I would say that its breakcore, but it really isn’t through & through. It's kind of like a film or game score. Rainy day candlelight sort of feel to it.

It's really strange sad and beautiful together. I definitely love this one.

I just realized after following them for years, that Sociopath Records was a Taiwanese record label. One more reason to go to Taiwan, ladyboys be damned.

Ambient and Dub Techno making out together in a dark corner somewhere for a long time. It's a collaborative project with another artist that goes by Transmolecular. I'm gonna look into and share more from these two later when I get a chance.

He makes art that he posts at his blog here.

The Plastic Jazz Orchestra - 39º

Band / Artist: The Plastic Jazz Orchestra
Year: 2010
Genre: Jazz, Electronica, IDM, Bedroom Pop

My Review:
Here is a good one for people who like jazz, but only in between long sessions of listening to electronica and IDM. It isn’t really jazz in the traditional instrument sense, but I came into this not expecting anything more than some keyboards, and it turned out to be a pleasant one to leave on while drawing. I'm a little sad to see that the head of the group died, because I think it would have made for a great project to keep an eye on and see how they grew.

Vertical67 - Wicklow House

Band / Artist: Vertical67
Year: 2010
Genre: IDM, Acid House

My Review:

If the Global Goon album didn't sit well with you, then I would suggest you try this one. This is a little more influenced by ambient and tech house to me.

It's a little more smooth and pleasant to me, and reminds me of some of the aphex twin side projects from back in the mid 90s.  I guess it just depends on what you like. Also, check out the artwork with this one, its really nice photography.

Vertical67 - Wicklow House

Global Goon - Carbon

Band / Artist: Global Goon
Year: 2011
Genre: Acid, IDM

My Review:
I have an album from Global Goon called “family glue” which always returns to my playlist with a vengance every year or so, this one just happened across my path.

I don't enjoy it nearly as much because I'm not as big a fan of acid, but I wanted to give it a share. If you like Aphex Twin, Autechre, or Plaid, then you should give this album from G Goon a chance, as he's been drifting on the scene for nearly as long as they have.

Global Goon – Carbon
