MemCave - Color Fire

Band / Artist: MemCave
Year: 2014
Genre: Electronic, IDM, Chillstep, Breakbeat

My Review:
During a period where I was halfway involved with the blog, I got a message from Kansas City based producer and DJ Keith Rich, otherwise known as MemCave, who I have posted here before. He gave me a copy of a soon-to-be-released album, Color Fire. I wanted to post it, but with everything going on, I didn't get to it for so long, that I couldn't justify trying to post the link to download while he was selling the album on bandcamp.

So fast-forwarding to now, I was going back and revisiting artists, and saw that he released the album under a Name-your-price setting, and since it has been a number of years, I feel okay in sharing it with people.

I listened to this album in the car for a really long time, and I am glad to share it with people. I was really down on myself for not sharing it before when I had the chance, so I hope you all enjoy it. There are these great repeating beat sets, with all this lush flourishing warm noise surrounding it and emotional melodies.

I strongly encourage you to give this a listen. And if you see this MemCave, I'm glad I got to share this one for you finally.

Eric Pietras - All This And More Than A Brother

Band / Artist: Eric Pietras
Year: 2015
Genre: Ambient, Electronic, Soundscape, IDM, Minimal

My Review:
This one is a good relaxing Soundscape/IDM album, with a ton of emotional growth in the songs. The description says some songs "are worlds unto themselves, inviting the listener to explore new vistas emerging from sonic fog", and I'd be inclined to agree.

I laid back and listened to this one this morning while coming to terms with being awake. It was a nice way to be peaceful. The artists description was this;

Eric Pietras is a scientist, photographer and musician from the San Francisco Bay Area. He also presents a weekly ambient/experimental internet radio show entitled 'Sounds In The Dark' at BFF.fm.

Sounds like my new best friend.

DJ Spooky - Of Water and Ice

Band / Artist: DJ Spooky
Year: 2012
Genre: Ambient, Experimental, Electronic

My Review:

I've seen DJ Spooky perform twice, both times being an artistic performance. He was once known for his DJ work, but these days he's moved to poetry, artistic sound pieces, and collaborations with many various persons throughout the art world.

This album is a very arty piece. Recordings were made in the arctic, and made into these very intricate soundscape pieces that are very much worth enjoying, especially if you are a fan of the more arty ambient music.

I wont waste your time, you'll either love or hate this, so I'll leave it up to you to figure out which.

Electronic Music Education - Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music

It isn't techno. and it isn't electronica. Its not dance, nor is it musique concrete. Electronic music spans so far and wide, that it has eaten a slice of rock, encapsulates all of r&b rap, and nearly all of pop. It has roots so far back that you could say it predated the civil war, and it very well may be what you'll hear in one way or another for the rest of your life, unless you listen to bluegrass.

So with all of that in mind, I'm going to share something I was given as a study guide sometime back near 2005. It has been defunct for so long now, that I'm occasionally worried that its going to be deleted, yet it remains.

I give you, Ishkurs guide to Electronic Music (v. 2.5). This will take you HOURS to read through, and it can give a name to hundreds of vague genres that you always enjoyed, or wanted to know.

here's a bland quote
"The guide attempts to depict the chronological order of electronic music genres' appearance. It contains 7 separate parent areas of electronic music to explore - House, Techno, Breakbeat, Jungle, Hardcore, Downtempo, and Trance."

The whole thing is done in flash, which leaves it a little annoying to me since I've done interfaces and web design, but the depth and entertainment that it brings makes up for it in droves. The tutorial about electronic music's historical beginnings alone is about 14 pages, but if all you want is to skip through all that and get into the music surfing, then you can go right ahead, and explore through at least a hundred genres, with songs tied to them, his impressions of it, as well as a little background into why it is what it is, where it started, what the scene was like.. There are even radio stations linked in to tons of the genres so that you can just instantly start listening to netradio of your favorites, or look up the bands listed under the genres you like (thats how I found Tsunami One)

If I met this person I would buy them any drink or drug they wanted, and just sit back and talk with them for a day at least.

Rumors circulate that he's working on a version 3, but there hasn't been any news about it for a while now. His website is just a landing page, and the last thing I've found was a DJ set that he did in anticipation of the next version.. from 11 months ago.

Ishkur - Pure Trance Mix
(Edit: it seems that Ishkur has quashed his account or at least the mix that was there. I found some online versions, so I've uploaded a copy to mediafire)

I hope that one day in the future, someone collects all of the information saved on this site, and keeps a copy of it as a backup to convert all that info into some other version, because one day in the future, this shit would make for the best textbook or college course ever.

Low Leaf - Alchemizing Dawn

Band / Artist: Low Leaf
Year: 2012
Genre: Harps, Dream Pop, Indie pop, Electronic, Neo-Soul

My Review:
This one sounds very similar to Little Dragon, but with more of a focus on analogue instruments, and a less funk-oriented sound (or at least depending on the track). The mixture of hip-hip, harp soundscapes, indie pop,and dream pop has apparently picked up the name Neo-Soul? It has melody and a good sound that I enjoyed enough to hunt down more.

Low Leaf is just one lady, and shes got really talented hands. Seriously, I would love to see her play live with all the skill she's been able to have while freestyling. She's also big into style and art, and so like all arty-style people, she's got a Tumblr account.

And I don't much like myself for doing this, because looks and music really should not be involved with one another, and it's easy to see this as demeaning....  but she is so cute.
Sorry, sorry. I digress. Here's her facebook profile.

And now, go check out the album

Freebies from latino artists

As well as being a hardcore music fiend, and an artist, I'm also very politically active. I support VotoLatino as one of the many civil rights organizations and non-profits that are out there pushing for social change. They specialize in trying to help fight against Latino-American abuse and help with a lot of other things that I'm sure you can find out if you're interested.

Some time yesterday they emailed out a promo code for a free 2 CD albums worth of tracks downloadable from iTunes. The bands in the list are all kinds of genres, mostly Latino, and for the most part in Spanish, but not in all cases.

Black Circle Records, TakeMeToTheMorgue!, Oddio Overplay, Silber Sounds of Halloween

Bands / Artists: Various
Years: 2011, 2011, 2006, 2007
Genre: Garage Rock, Electronic, Soundtrack, Experimental, Dark Ambient, Noise-Rock, Drone, Rockabilly, Sound Collage, Goth

My Review:

This one is all about the haunted house scores, although there is a BUNCH of other stuff here. Totally worth having a look.

Black Circle Records

Soundscapes, drones, score elements. This is an album perfected for playing in your haunted house that you REALLY should be making. This was probably my favorite of the creepy soundtracks I found, for how subdued and ominous it proved to be.

Apparently there are like 6 record labels called “Black Circle Records”. This one is located in the UK. I know very little more about them.

Watch out for that second to last track, its very loud harsh noise, whereas the rest of the album is most definitely not that.

Black Circle Records - Halloween in a Haunted World Remix Project

TakeMeToTheMorgue!

A lot of dark and creepy scores, and some really mean grungy techno and metal stuffs in the mix. There are a few tracks that I would cut before using the mix somewhere, but overall, this is a pretty solid addition.

TakeMeToTheMorgue! - This Dark Virus

Oddio Overplay

A good collection of creepy stuff. This one is a great halloween set, with more sound collages and classical sets in the midst of it than the others. Some of it reminds me of playing through Hell in Doom 3. You will probably want to edit some of it out and keep what you like most though.

Oddio Overplay - Calling All Fiends

Silber Sounds of Halloween

I thought it hilarious that one of my favorite tracks from this was from a band named “Planet Cock”. This one is a much wider mix of genres, like the last one.  There is some really good garage spooky rock in here to be had, like the track from “Drats!”. Same as the last one though, I would probably go through it and pick out what you really enjoy to keep or use.
