Bitbasic - Leonard

Band / Artist: Bitbasic
Year: 2009
Genre: IDM, Electronica, Shoegaze, Ambient Techno

My Review:
He brought you Meek, and I liked it, so I'll just pretend that you did too.

This one has some similarities, and keeps his sense of style, but is an obviously different approach to making an album. He made the whole thing in one month. ONE. I'm very impressed. Its so polished, and has so many good parts. I like to think of it as easy listening for the weirdos and people who get bored by easy listening.

I hope you get a kick out of this one. Bitbasic is London-based electronica artist Simon Haycock. I'm hoping that one day I get to chat with this fellow.

Enjoy!

Líam - MMIX

Band / Artist: Líam
Year: 2012
Genre: Experimental, Ambient, Post-rock, Shoegaze

My Review:
I asked a while back for some friends to do a couple reviews of music that they really enjoyed. I've decided that now might be an interesting time to start going through them. Starting out is a review from a close friend of mine whose a synesthetic. Here is her review.

Tagged as “Experimental, ambient, post-rock, shoegaze” on Bandcamp, MMIX by the German band Líam manages to hit all of those points beautifully. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the album since I had never heard the band before, but I was in a post-rock kind of mood and it made me feel like a junkie getting my fix.  Due to the synesthesia, I’m going to have to describe this music mostly in visuals because that’s the easiest way for me to verbalize it.
MMIX oscillates between hard, guitar-diven rock and softer ambient and experimental sounds. The softer music I would describe as pleochroic, stealing the gemologists’ term for a color change that occurs with a shift of light. It’s a little like focusing a camera; overall, the music looks a certain colour and texture, muted greys, soft greens and blues and the occasional lavender, with the smoky nature that only post-rock seems to do well. However, as I focus my ear on a particular instrument, the focus shifts and music changes from a veiled scene to a brilliant shade of orange or blue, with staccato textures I ignored on the highest level. These colours appear against the mist of the greater view, but at a much higher altitude.

In their more vibrant moments, Líam achieves a coherence of purpose among it’s individual sounds, with slightly varying hues moving together and forming a concrete directional movement. Much like watching a turbid spray of water twisting and advancing in minimal gravity, but lit from within with coloured light. In these moments the background, the outer edge of the music, my peripheral musical vision, is not black as it is in most songs, but a deep red or orange still within the visible spectrum.

When Líam returns from their ignition they tend to do so in a void, with focused execution that allows an individual sound to vibrate and move as a lit wavelength, moving in impossible trajectories but always reshaping to an original form. The beautiful lifts and drops of Líam’s music make it easy to simply close your eyes and listen only, doing nothing but appreciating the soundscapes this band is able to produce.

Well I think that definitely does this justice. I hope you enjoy, and Thank you Ned for sharing some good post rock.

Golden Gardens - Only the Lonely

My Review:
Dreampop, Shoegaze,.. Dreamgaze?

A long while ago, I made friends with a guy named Gregg in Tampa. He was friends with Dan, the one who I talked about in the On An Ocean Amp post. Gregg and I hung out whenever I was in town, and even had a few jam sessions. For a while we were working on some kind of harsh noise, ambient, and power electronic, and that kinda got left on the side while I was in college. He's since moved to Seattle, and started the Golden Gardens project, which I'm loving. Its soft, dreamy, droney stuff with just enough new wave and just enough gothy sensibility to make it great. Quoting the writeup on the track..     We Are Golden Gardens and We Love You. xx.

Judda - Bark & Omen (Pig Remixes)

These came from some old version of "The Swining", the blog run by Pig, or Raymond Watts. Its Industrial Rock.

I never listened to a whole lot of the Pig albums repeatedly, but mostly because I really loved "Wrecked" so much that it kinda covered for the rest. I caught these one day while working through a backlog of bloggy things, and thought that they would be perfect, since I don't often find a lot of free industrial to share.

Degeneración Debraye - Body & Simphony (single mix)

This was a teaser release for the upcoming debut on the Engraved Ritual record label. Their facebook page is here.

Its mostly Aggrotech for the first half, then turns EBM with this entertaining baroque sounding synth playing. I chuckled the second it started up. Good track though

Brutally Honest - Deck of 54

A short, swift, jazzy hiphop track, the the creepiest fucking picture i could have imagined. Seriously. that thing makes me kind of uncomfortable, and it makes the song seem like it should be super dark, but it isnt at all.

Sadly, my intended share of Sockweb was paywalled before I could share it, but I'll link to it, because a six year old in a grindcore band is hilarious and awesome. Sockweb -  I want pancakes

Merchandise – Children of Desire

Band/Artist: Merchandise
Year: 2012
Genre: Post-Punk, Shoegaze, New Wave, Folk
My Review:
Central Florida s where I grew up, and it is best described as a really unusual place. People do tons of meth there, Churches are the size of shopping malls, the elected governor always ends up being an asshole, and there is a giant metal scene and a smaller (but strong) goth scene.
Merchandise was a band suggested to me by a friend from tampa that I used to make music with. I hadn't been very in touch with the scene in a while, and missed out on some interesting indie/ shoegaze/ dream pop/ new wave crossovers. I guess this is referred to as post punk? Honestly i never know anymore with the soft rock scene, and mostly rely on the genre listings to help guide me through what exactly i'm listening to. Okay so enough of that, on to describing the album.
I wasn't sure what was starting up at the begininng of the first track I heard, and once the singer started in i started to imagine this was a group of people who really enjoyed that old Q Lazarus song from Silence of the Lambs (everybody tuck your junk!). They have a really pleasant sound, making something that could have easily been placed back in the early 90's or today. The mix has some really interesting noise and ambient backings, which a few times during a jog scared the shit out of me. I think they might push the weird a little far in some spots with some dissonant moments that took me out of the groove for a second. The layout of the album is ; short short long, short short long, and the long tracks seem like theyd be way too much, but when playing back, it works really well, like a momentary solo jam session in the midst of the tracks.

They have an older album listed as well if you liked them a lot, but that one is a little bit noisier. Nonetheless, if you like it then awesome, this band could really go somewhere if they build up their recording mixing and keep it up. I listened to this one over and over for days.

Observer Drift - Corridors

Band / Artist: Observer Drift
Year: 2012
Genre: Alternative, Dream Pop, Indie, Lo-fi, Shoegaze

My Review:

This is some really good hipsterish chillout by a guy named Collin Ward. He's unsigned, and works at a pizza place apparently. I really dig what he's working on, and hope that he gets some attention for what he's got going on. Check out his Facebook page here.

It would be a really good album to throw on for the romantic dinner with a person who loves new music.
