Psilodump - Memory Loss

Band / Artist: Psilodump
Year: 2004
Genre: Chiptune, Breakbeat, Electronica

My Review:
"Memories may become corrupted but beauty remains. Still, that is no excuse for acting blind … or maybe it is … what you have lost might not just be your memory."
I know I posted this before.. but I loved this one so much, as it was the quintessential chiptune album to really get me into the genre overall. I know I always loved music from my genesis games, but this just represented a new way to see that music, as not just a nostalgia for a game, but as an instrument being used, as bit compression midi representing a boundary box to work in. Its only 4 tracks, but even today it holds up as a flagpost for the rest of the chiptune music I enjoy.

And because of the 10 year anniversary, here is a celebration single.

-{:(.SINGLES.):}- All Electronic, All the time (Nnls, Aardonyx, Notch, Rameses B, Alex Tune)

Band / Artist: Nnls, Aardonyx, Notch, Rameses B, Alex Tune
Year: 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017
Genre: NRG, Hardcore Techno, Nu Breaks, Electro House, EDM, Electronica, Techno, Trance, House, Drum and Bass, Lo-fi

My Review:

Notch - Listen To The Rhythm / Descent
Some great old style uplifting trance/house stuff. I really enjoy the use of the rhythmic repetition of the vocal tracks and atmospherics. I posted them not long ago actually.

Nnls - Connection
This has a great lo-fi feel and a really well done atmospheric quality.
nnls about the release: „Roads are more comprehensive than any other human sign, nothing is shared more than them, sometimes they last for thousand years. So, while listening to the album you can try to work out road names from titles and draw my own non-existing non-spiral non-jetty.“

Here is the website built as advertising for the full album.

Aardonyx - Dedicated
Drum N Bass is always a welcome return to the table. This one is very similar to Hybrid, for the mix of the techno sound with orchestral suites and ethereal female vocals. Here is their bio.
aardonyx are a UK born production duo writing Drum and Bass in minimal, abstract and liquid styles, with a wide variety of musical influences.
After making music separately for many years they joined forces under the name Aardonyx in 2016.
This is just a taste of what's to come...

Rameses B - Russ EP
This is sort of that Pop-anthem EDM (Electro/House) you hear these days, and its got a good hook to it. Would be good music for a compilation video of someone doing crazy cliffhanging stunts or skiing barefoot on youtube.

Alex Tune - Takes Me Higher
Some gritty Hardcore or Progressive Breaks/NRG/Nu Breaks with that late ninties to 2010 sort of rap-rock singover style going on. I like it some, but I'll need to listen to it when I'm more in the mood.

Bitbasic - Leonard

Band / Artist: Bitbasic
Year: 2009
Genre: IDM, Electronica, Shoegaze, Ambient Techno

My Review:
He brought you Meek, and I liked it, so I'll just pretend that you did too.

This one has some similarities, and keeps his sense of style, but is an obviously different approach to making an album. He made the whole thing in one month. ONE. I'm very impressed. Its so polished, and has so many good parts. I like to think of it as easy listening for the weirdos and people who get bored by easy listening.

I hope you get a kick out of this one. Bitbasic is London-based electronica artist Simon Haycock. I'm hoping that one day I get to chat with this fellow.

Enjoy!

Bitbasic - Meek

Band / Artist: Bitbasic
Year: 2012
Genre: Nu Breaks, IDM, Glitch, Electronica, Jungle, Breakbeat, Future Garage

My Review:
Name; Simon Haycock. Location; London. Skill; Electronica?

This is a gem in the IDM, , whatever-you-say kind of electronica world. I've referenced the album "Family Glue" by Global Goon before, and this is an album that feels like it is on par with that same bubbly, playful, groovy feel. Some moments have that kind of skill that Beck was notorious for, taking bunches of noise, and making it into something completely different.

Its one part of Jazz and Funk, shaken over frozen Jungle, and then poured in a Glitch glass with some fresh IDM squeezed over the top... I need better analogies.

Here is his fabecook. He posts regularly from it.

Welp. I could gab your ear off all day about how much I've been annoying friends with this cd on repeat, but I'll just let you go listen for yourself.

The Queenstons - Figurehead Remastered

Band / Artist: The Queenstons
Year: 2011
Genre: Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Electronica, Breakbeat, Jungle

My Review:
Ok, so the label is called Lapfox, or Lapfox Trax. And I guess its one guy (Renard Queenston) doing many different styles under different aliases? I don't really know. I couldn't give two shits though, because its some really decent music. He even made a little promo video for it coming out.

The first version of this album came out a few years ago, a drum & bass anthem album for the most part. Some very game-y sounding moments here and there. The Original was not available for free, but the remastered version, which sounds more clean and full, is. This has a pretty huge number of additional tracks, and it really pleased me to find it.

Fairly tuned voices, sound like they were recording on shitty mics but they did a very good job of masking it and presenting something that comes together as solid as a marble. A pretty professional sounding album that makes for a great listen,  especially if you like Dieselboy, BT, and AK1200, or Paul Oakenfold and DJ Keoki vocals. It feels like stepping back toward 2004 and getting a nostalgic look. There are definitely dubsteppy moments here and there, but they don't undermine the strength of this album overall.

I'd rank this at a rate high enough that it may be in my top 10 DnB albums now (yes I really do have more than that many, I really love techno). So give this a chance, and expect to see me sharing more from Lapfox in the future.

Boom Bip & Charlie White - Music for Sleeping Children

Band / Artist: Boom Bip & Charlie White
Year: 2012
Genre: Alternative Pop, Electronica, Hip-hop, Experimental, Spoken Word

My Review:
Music for Sleeping Children is more of an art collaboration than a band work, but its still an album, and its still by good artists, and good enough that I'm keeping it. So this is the gist, visual artist Charlie White calls up Boom Bip, and says "Hey, I'm interviewing teen girls about their lives in a recording studio. Come turn it into music." So that happens, and it becomes an EP of fun and oddly existential music, released side by side with crazy artsy music videos.

This isn't the first project that they did together.

The project stems from White's investigations of the representation of American adolescence, and was born from a relationship forged between White and Hollon in 2009 when they collaborated on "We Like to Shop," a simple clap-along song from White's experimental cartoon, OMG BFF LOL that Hollon converted into a throbbing club track for the work's US premier at the Aldrich Museum. From there, White and Hollon set out to realize a far more ambitious project conceived by White as the marriage of in-depth teen interviews, discussions, and studio projects with pop, electronica, hip hop and experimental composition. Working in tandem, White and Hollon fashioned the concept of each track around the original studio recordings of teen girls ranging in age from 12 to 16. From eager enthusiasms, to exuberant chants, to adolescent melancholia, Music for Sleeping Children underscores the complex tensions resonant in the teen voices while transforming each girl into a popular music form of her own. Magical, uncomfortable, and original, Music for Sleeping Children is an artwork, an archive, and an album.

On An Ocean Amp - We Are Now Growing Fast

Band / Artist: On An Ocean Amp
Year: 2005
Genre: Electropop, Glitch, Electronica, Experimental, Powerpop, Electro, Synth-pop

My Review:
One day, back in 2003, I'm sitting in a bar watching a noise show and drinking with a girl I had a crush on, when this guy I had started to make friends with walks in with a cardboard box filled with cds under his arm. He's Dan. He started a record label, and some random band from japan had signed to release their first album with him. It was for sale at $10 apiece, and this was what it looked like.

On An Ocean Amp? What? Well, I wanted to support Dan, and I'm all about a random band with an interesting album cover. Its like an adventure in a disc, you never know if it'll be amazing, or shit.

So when I played it on the ride back home, I was completely unsure what I was listening to. Its like an experimental electropop band with a cutesy japanese girl voice over the whole thing. Its like childhood packaged into synths.

Years later in college I emailed their website (now defunct), and got an email back later in the day. The guy in the duo, Mike McGuire, was super friendly and we ended up chatting for a few years. He sent me this album before it was done, as well as his own solo album, which I hope I can post here later on.

Well the band broke up pretty much as this album was being finished up, and what he said was enough for a 2 disc album ended up as this, a great album of strange Japanese influenced IDM/Electropop with a very good spread of tunes. I wonder how he is doing, and if either he, or Kaori are doing any new music projects. Rest assured, I'll let you know the moment that I find out.

Here is a review for the album.

Here is a direct repackaging of the album in case the original fails. I fixed up all the ID3 tag info, and even made an unofficial cover since it never got an official one.

Nine Inch Nails - The Slip

Band/Artist: Nine Inch Nails
Year: 2008
Genre: Industrial rock, Alternative rock, Electronica

My Review:
You might have heard of this band before just a little bit. This was farly and widely publicized, and probably shouldn't be something I go out of my way to post, but it was well worth a review and download. After being around for 20 years, and managing to be incredibly popular, Nine Inch nails released this album as a gift to the fans that had given so much money and love throughout all of those two decades.

This is one of those rare albums that is free, not a promo, and you would hear a song from it on the radio. There was a feel to this album that seems like since Trent Reznor had no monetary incentive behind it and the release, he took liberties and just explored it in whatever way he wanted to. Some big NIN fans were a little harsh on this, especially closer to the end, but I personally enjoy something that shows a growth and a personal touch, especially with what this album represented. It even comes with a collection of artworks, all minimal, ominous, and gritty, representing each track on the album.

The sound is similar in ways to with teeth, using some really strong, hard hitting rockstar sounds, and warping them with a mindblowing expanse of synth hookups, circuit bending mods, post processing edits, and god knows what else. There are a few tracks that harken to the rare "Still" EP that was released with the "And All That Could Have Been" tour video and album, as well as some tracks harkening to the "Ghosts" project released earlier the same year. It isn't the longest album, or maybe the best of their track history, but it really holds its own, especially with the slow down and fade out that it has, and how far it steps from (and around, and within) the rest of the NIN discography.

If you are a fan of Nine Inch Nails, enjoy the gift, and hopefully the band will come out of their retirement and make another album in the future.

Somatic Responses - Mercury

Band / Artist: Somatic Responses
Year: 2009
Genre: Dubstep,  Dark Techno, Electronica, Breakcore

My Review:
This one is a band that was starting out doing breakcore with Venetian Snares back in early 2000s. The release is on Acroplane records. This sounds like something a dubstep fan would enjoy, though I wouldn't call it that. I've had it in my collection for about 3 years, and I've been following the group since early '04.

I love when I can get a chance to support those dark horse guys who were in the background since the beginning of a music era, and this would be an example of one of those bands.

Re:Generation

Band / Artist: Skrillex, the Doors, Martha Reeves, Pretty Lights, Trombone Shorty, Erykah Badu, DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, the Berklee Symphony Orchestra, Nas, and The Crystal Method
Year: 2012
Genre: Electronica, Jazz, Hip-hop

My Review:

This one is your mainstream thing. So mainstream in fact, that it's sponsored by Hyundai. (dude, first Scion, then Honda, now Hyundai. Why are car companies so gung-ho about fresh techno?)

They got a collection of artists together, and then paired off sets of them together to try and collaborate on varying styles and approaches to music.

The first half of this is the original cuts, with the second go around being remixed versions of each track. For the most part, this seemed a little bit forced and lifeless, like the setups were chosen by a reality tv writer team, and the people all got a paycheck to try and make something filmworthy happen.
I liked the second half more than the first in some parts, but it was definitely something for an aspiring DJ to grab up.

The Plastic Jazz Orchestra - 39º

Band / Artist: The Plastic Jazz Orchestra
Year: 2010
Genre: Jazz, Electronica, IDM, Bedroom Pop

My Review:
Here is a good one for people who like jazz, but only in between long sessions of listening to electronica and IDM. It isn’t really jazz in the traditional instrument sense, but I came into this not expecting anything more than some keyboards, and it turned out to be a pleasant one to leave on while drawing. I'm a little sad to see that the head of the group died, because I think it would have made for a great project to keep an eye on and see how they grew.
