SO GOOD. I love good punk rap, expecially great remixes of good punk rap. I'm really bouncing my head to this. So, Marijuana Death Sqauds made a remix from P.O.S's album, We Don't Even Live Here.

P.O.S describes the album by saying, "WDELH/MDS/RMX is We Don't Even Live Here, remixed and re-imagined by my dancy, noise band Marijuana Deathsquads.”

Anyway, If you enjoyed Run The Jewels / Meow The Jewels, then this one will be right up your alley. I'm gonna say something that'd start a firestorm over at pitchfork, but these guys and the kind of music they are putting out is what I think of as the prime styles of aggressive punk-rap. I'd rather one album from them, than ten by Death Grips. Not to talk smack, but the mixing of power and groove is a big part of it, for me at least.

20 minutes of meditative soundscapes by Low Leaf. It's very interesting and pleasant. I don't know what to say for it, other than it reminds me of her other work, but more as a broken apart, experimental jam session of them. Its a little more Cocteau Twins, and a little less Little Dragon.

This was the email sent to me to talk about the track, which is a really great punky acoustic track with great horn lines along the background of the whole song. I'm digging it.

New York NY— "Slant Rhymes and Eye Rhymes", the latest single from Brooklyn based folk punk act Out of System Transfer, proves that oft-repeated saw that traveling the road changes you.
The band, mostly native New Yorkers, have spent a substantial amount of time over the past several months on the road supporting their debut EP “Same Rat Different Hat”,  tightening their live show, and building a dedicated following throughout the Northeast.
On one such trip the band spent a day at Hiwatts Studio in Providence, RI and recorded 3 new tracks, which they will be releasing over the next few months as free downloads.
"Slant Rhymes," the first release, is a marked departure for the band, explains front man Jesse Sternberg: “I love geography in songs. We have a whole bunch of songs about New York City, and this was my shot at getting some of the rest of the country in the mix. It's an unusually personal and unusually optimistic and non-angry song, for me.”
The song—with lyrics like “Let’s start a song, on this side of the Verrazano, get the tune down by the other side,” tells a particularly personal but relatable story for the band--but more broadly is about the joy of art and music. “Traveling can inspire songwriting, songwriting can lead to touring, and so on in a creative virtuous cycle. Mostly it's about how lucky and excited I feel to have the chance to travel and play music with such a great group of musicians and friends,” explains Sternberg.
You can see them tonight at Palisades in Brooklyn with Pat the Bunny, Brook Pridemore, and Prewar Yardsale, following which they’ll be living out this song as they hit the road again over the weekend.

This one is really fun. They used a dancer (Twerk Queen Louise), hooked sensors to her hips, thighs, and butt, and let her bounce out all of the beats and rhythms into a sampler. Afterward, they worked all of them together into a dance track. Novel usage, and dat booty makes some music.

BRO SAFARIIIIIII! I like this guys stuff. Every time I bump into his weird mix of electro/trap/whatever I end up enjoying myself. This time is no different.

So…

Here it is. The album that we've been talking about for over a year. Scheduling conflicts be damned, we made it happen! Yes, the process was long, and at times it was even a little grueling, but we stuck to our guns and we couldn't be happier with the results.

Originally, we created about 16 tracks for the album, and then we narrowed it down to the songs that you have in front of you today. It was important to us that we create a collection of music that crossed multiple styles and genres, yet told a coherent story. It's not an easy thing to do, but we feel like we pulled it off by using themes, samples, techniques and by consciously assessing what did and did not work together.

We feel like there is something for everyone on this record and we're very pleased with the fact that we can offer this to everyone for free. All we ask is that you listen to it with an open mind, share it with your friends and come say hello whenever we play a show in your city.

So, once again - Thank you to each and every person that showed us support over the last few years. We love working together, and have already discussed plans for a follow up album.

For now, enjoy ANIMAL!

This is awesome news, because I've been listening to Pretty Lights for the past couple of years. I'm excited to see him blowing up the world with his music, AND HE'S STILL GIVING IT AWAY. Okay, to be fair, you can also buy it (and you probably should throw him a few bucks since he works so hard), and there are links to that on his website here, http://prettylightsmusic.com/

As far as the music goes, it is a different sound and approach than the last Pretty Lights works. I think that for this one, he had started with a beat, then had artists come in and make music over it, only for him to come back through, mix and process their work, then do his magic over top of the whole thing. The end result is a wobbly, glitchy, soulful album that teeters between sad and active, with big old style jazz elements throughout.

My Review:
Did you watch old 90s anime movies, and find yourself enjoying the tackiness of the synths they used for the background music? Do you ever find yourself walking at night and wishing that somewhere off in the distance, there was a guy soulfully playing a saxophone? Did you fall in love with the wobble base noise the second you first heard of this mythical thing called "Dub of the Steppe"?

Well if you didn't answer any of those questions with a yes, then fuck you. Enjoy this band anyways.

Cosby sweater popped up in a random music search about 6 months ago. I was REALLY enjoying them, but somehow they fell off my radar and into my collection of tracks I needed to review one day. I found them again recently, and remembered why they made me so happy. There is so much going on here, that I'll let someone else try to explain it.

Everything about Cosby Sweater is catchy. From their witty moniker and humorous album covers, to the abounding funk they unleash. The burgeoning trio has established a knack for composing spellbinding numbers in the field of live electronica, fusing slick production with head-turning instrumentation on each robust release. This results is something so effervescent, so hair-raising, that even their most docile efforts could turn a dance-floor upside down

So if that doesn't tell you whats up, then I'll say a pinch more. David Embry on synth and vocals, Nicholas Gerlach on Tenor Saxophone and EWI, and Richard “Sleepy” Floyd on drums.

 

 They remind me a little of Pretty Lights,  but with these parts that remind me of old synthy anime soundtracks, glitchy triphop/dubstep grooves, and then layers of saxphone and warm flourishes over all of it.

If you don't bob your head to this, then you hate freedom.

Not a single per se, this is 3 tracks, just short enough that I'd rather share it under a singles post this time. It is a dark ambient, IDM, and Illbient set, which reminds me a lot of some early Aphex Twin. There are elements of breakbeats in it, and some soundtrack feeling in parts.

Mystified has been releasing on Treetrunk Records pretty steadily for quite a few years. This is what this release is described with;

Three songs created mainly for emotional content. No weird sources or strange ideas here, other than that finding love has changed the life and music of Mystified.

(Special Post) The Collected Works of Ken Smith

My Review:

Ken was a friend of mine. We met in 2001 on a friends message board. We would talk online intermittently, but Ken was the sort of personality that even if you never met him in person, he would shine through. When I went off to Europe and heard frenchcore, Ken was the first person I thought of sharing it with. We shared a love for music, especially techno. We also had a lot of conversations about religion and art (and the chan), but music was always on our minds, and we were always sharing and collecting new artists between one another.

Ken died at the beginning of 2007. When I found out he was gone, I was confused, startled, and saddened. Like many who knew him online, we knew his computers would come and go in terms of working. I found out he had passed away in October 2007, long after he was laid to rest. I decided to try my best to find and contact all of his old friends, and collect every song or part of a song they still had from him.

It took a few years, and it came to a dauntingly large amount of music. After that the thing to do was sort it into albums the most like he would have made. I have to thank Briana Rhodes, Matt Clark, and Patrick Durbin, because they are the only way I could have found all of his music.

Some tracks have been edited to make them fit together better, or to provide closure to a track. A few tracks I remixed to make them work (especially on our collaboration album). Not every track is perfectly how I found it, or under the same name it was done under. Some song titles were altered, or in the cases of no original title, renamed with something Ken would like. The album art was all created with references or images ken had made or been in, with exception where needed.
 

I hope you enjoy this memorial to my friend. K.Flay & Danny Brown - Party All The Time

Another track from K.Flay. Good, chill, hiphop with a sound that I enjoy. Not a lot else to say, it starts a little weird, and then gets really good about halfway in. I'm not sure what else to say. If you like K.Flay, then you'll enjoy this. If you don't know who that is, then you need to do a search of the archives.

Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra - Frisco Fog

Jimmie Lunceford and his Orchestra perform "'Frisco Fog", a futuristic "Descriptive Instrumental" dating from November 5, 1937. From the original 78rpm disk.

This one is neat. Its futuristic jazz,.. from the Thirties. There is a really pleasant improvisation in it, with a sound that I can only describe as oddly wonderful or wonderfully odd. There is a great feel in the winding rhythm of its Big Band orchestra. This one is in the public domian, obviously, because Mr. Lunceford died (of what may have been a poisoning) in 1947. He's buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, TN. He also has a brass note dedicated to him on Beale St.

This is a pretty chill dancey mixtape, something that people who are really into the Drive soundtrack would love. You have to "like" their stuff on facebook to get access to all of the fixtapes, but its worth it. If you just cant be bothered though, then you should go here.

Voicians - Ultimate Riot
This has a definite "Prodigy" sound, mixed with just a bit of electro, and a bit of celldweller-style industrial rock on top of it. Its really driving dance song. Maybe a little bit "The Matrix 2010", but thats my kind of dance music.

Dan Voicians is from Stuttgart Germany, a city that I spent a night in with some strangers who were kind enough to transport me from a very rape-space-y train station an hour away that I got left at. Derek Vincent Smith, the man, the mystery, the music. 
He's from Fort Collins, Colorado, and he's fresh into his thirties. He makes you dance.

He heads the Pretty Lights Music record label, which gives away their music for free, but asks for a donation via PayPal. All members of the label try to make all their money from touring and tips, which is an incredible thing to see someone do well in.

In 2010, his music career had begun to kick off pretty well, so he decided that during his touring, he'd make this trilogy of albums. He got everything together and cranked out his first on March 2nd, Making Up A Changing Mind.

By July 29th, he dropped Spilling Over Every Side.

And had the finale out by October 22nd, Glowing In The Darkest Night.

This set of albums has a ton going on. Trip-hop layouts, Electro and Dubstep effects, tons of Mashups from old Funk and R&B, as well as a ton of other places. It all melds together really well, creating a lush, funky Bastard Pop sound that makes you want to dance badly with your friends. I strongly encourage you to grab these three, and then go back to his website and drop him a couple bucks so he can get a cheeseburger or a beer.

I wish there was a little more to say about the guy, but I couldn't find much else. So here's what I have to say about the album itself. It reminds me of Luke Vibert (especially as Plug), or Source Direct. There could have been a little more to it here or there, but I ended up listening to it a few times in a row because of its sound. There are ethereal, dubby, jazzy, and sometimes droney soundscapes layered into jungle beats of varying complexity and depth, sometimes bending into Amen Breaks and Breakcore flares. The tracks can be pretty long, and sometimes offer very slowly changing sounds, which can leave you wanting, depending on how your tastes for techno are.

Bootie RIO doing what they do. Reminding me of how much good mashup work comes up all over the world every day.  Is it just me, or are gorrilaz getting seriously overplayed these days? I only see that from their first album though, and a pinch of their second. I wonder what that says about their album quality onward.

Hot Mouth (feat. Chris James) - Totally Worth It (Peacetreaty Remix)

Dancehall electro with a big pop-house vibe. I love good dancey techno, especially when I get to keep the track to play whenever I want. Dancing time in the kitchen.

Waves - Waves EP

Dreampop, Ambient Post-rock, Ambient techno. Somewhere in all of those is this short album. It has a sound that makes me wish there were some very soft, raw lyrics in an iron & wine style somewhere along the line.

On An Ocean Amp - We Are Now Growing Fast

My Review:
One day, back in 2003, I'm sitting in a bar watching a noise show and drinking with a girl I had a crush on, when this guy I had started to make friends with walks in with a cardboard box filled with cds under his arm. He's Dan. He started a record label, and some random band from japan had signed to release their first album with him. It was for sale at $10 apiece, and this was what it looked like.

On An Ocean Amp? What? Well, I wanted to support Dan, and I'm all about a random band with an interesting album cover. Its like an adventure in a disc, you never know if it'll be amazing, or shit.

So when I played it on the ride back home, I was completely unsure what I was listening to. Its like an experimental electropop band with a cutesy japanese girl voice over the whole thing. Its like childhood packaged into synths.

Years later in college I emailed their website (now defunct), and got an email back later in the day. The guy in the duo, Mike McGuire, was super friendly and we ended up chatting for a few years. He sent me this album before it was done, as well as his own solo album, which I hope I can post here later on.

Well the band broke up pretty much as this album was being finished up, and what he said was enough for a 2 disc album ended up as this, a great album of strange Japanese influenced IDM/Electropop with a very good spread of tunes. I wonder how he is doing, and if either he, or Kaori are doing any new music projects. Rest assured, I'll let you know the moment that I find out.

My Review:

IT'S SO 80's/90's POP. this one is great, because it does have that old sound but still manages to feel pretty fresh. They are a band from Buffalo, who are possibly named after the women's shellmaking fleet in the UK during WWI. I love the name, especially after finding the history behind it. Their website looks smooth, but doesn't seem to work very well. It made it kind of hard to figure out more info about the band. Nonetheless, here it is.

I'd say that they took from all of the old New Wave/Pop sounds of radio hits back in the day, and found their own way to streamline all of those influences and inspirations into this really nicely packaged sound, that still manages to have this unique indie pop flavor. Tracks come together really nicely as an album.
