The Melker Project - Ballin' Oates

Band / Artist: The Melker Project
Year: 2013
Genre: Mashup, Bastard Pop, Rap, Alternative Hip-Hop

My Review:
I completely forgot this one! Man i love it. I jammed to this for weeks around last Christmas and forgot to make a review. Take Hall & Oates, and add hiphop & rap. Its so so good, and I helped make a small war between lovers with this album. Worth it.

Gonna let you do more searching on your own this time. See you next time around.

Quickie Mart - Gypsyphonic Disko with Ben Ellman

Band / Artist: Quickie Mart
Year: 2009
Genre: Balkan, Bounce, Hip-Hop, Mashup, Bastard Pop

 My Review:
I've been listening to stuff from quickie mart for a while now, and some other monikers of his. I first caught him in an interview where he was dissecting bounce, its influences, and its role in the future of music, for good or for ill.

He seems like a smart guy, and its interesting that his music of choice be bounce, which I can completely understand, because of what bounce is and represents. It's gritty, shitty, and it doesn't really care. Anyways, here's a comp album of mixtapes I guess, of some hip-hop, some bounce, some rap, and Balkan beats & gypsy music. It's dancey, raunchy, and just fun all the way through.

My mom even danced to it (not like that, sicko.) While we were cooking for thanksgiving meal.

So yeah, take that.

La Masheillaise 2, La Revolu'son Francaise

Band / Artist: Various Artists
Year: 2013
Genre: Bastard Pop, Mashup

My Review:
STRAIGHT OUTTA RIO! FR-wait what? French Mashups? Well okay, lets give it a shot.. and its GOOOD!! I got this through the Bootie Rio collective, which is what left me confused as to why there was a French mashup compilation on there, but who cares if the music is good right?

Okay so I'll admit that I do find a couple tracks to be a little meh, but its a good set of songs that I have admittedly never heard, mashed against songs I've heard for ages, and it comes out as a fresh mashup album, something that can get hard to find every once in awhile.

Max Tannone - Ghostfunk

 Band / Artist: Max Tannone
Year: 2011
Genre: Mashup, Funk, Dance, Hip-Hop

My Review:
All Ghostface Killa, all vintage african funk mixes. I shared an album from Max Tannone back last year, if you can remember Mos Dub, which is an all time favorite for me.

This album creates a really creative set of new grooves and rythms for a selection of Ghostface Killa's hit tracks, and the use of african funk tracks is so perfect, making these really chill and fresh sounding hip-hop tracks that kick ass.

If you dig this, and Mos Dub, then don't wait, and shoot back to the start of the blog, and pick up Wugazi - 13 Chambers as well. Wu Tang clan may be nothing to fuck with, but they sure are something to mash.

Fissunix - Heavy Metal Mashups Vol. 2 “Louder Than Hell Mix”

Band / Artist: Various Artists, Fissunix
Year: 2012
Genre: Metal, Mashup

My Review:
So I'm back again with something to break out of the chill and sad music that I seem to have been picking for the past few weeks. I guess I'm doing a decent job of shaking my blues, but Heavy Metal mashup tracks will definitely help with that.

This is a compilation, or a mixtape, depending on which you want. I like hearing the original tracks separately a lot of the time, so I have my collection. I love that first track. It amuses me to no end, and also, I can totally rock to it while laughing. Heres the tracklist, I'll let you figure out what songs are mashed for each one.

Fissunix & DJ Schmolli – HairBangers
Dan Mei – Last Ride Of The New Shit
Mad Mix Mustang – 2 Minutes To The Middle Of The Night
Loo & Placido – Antisocial Pigs
Bassnectar Remix – Seek and Destroy
Dj Schmolli – Cold As Superbeast Prometheus
Wax Audio – South Of The Grapevine
Loo & Placido – Black Sab System
Wax Audio – Master Of Doin’ It
DJ Morgoth – Ace Of Spades Feels Good
Dj Schmolli – Rock Of Ages
Dan Mei – Rolling In The Fire And Flames
Tinylightsbelow – Psychosocial Baby
Fissunix – Birth of the Cannibal
Dan Mei – Coat Of Arms Of E.T.
Fissunix – Over wasted years
Fissunix – Grid it up
Wax Audio – Chemical Diver
Dj Schmolli – Cold As Superbeast Prometheus

So I will say that I am not a big fan of every track, some of it is pretty take-it-or-leave-it, but I'm still happy getting some fun metal mashups, people don't mash metal songs nearly enough. If you like any specific track, go check out that artist, because I'll bet you can find some more by them that you enjoy.

Deadfile - Deadfile

Band / Artist: Deadfile
Year:2012
Genre: Post-rock, Blues, Mashup, Neo-Classical, Dark Jazz

My Review:
I'm not a big fan of post rock. I was sort of a few times, but I've never been able to really embrace it. In my quests I have found many things bordering on the post rock genre that I do enjoy, and this is one that I would definitely consider as having a shot of being in that list.

This album is a rich mix of Neo-Classical, Dark Jazz, Post-Rock, and a strange mashup of Blues tracks into the first couple songs. It's slow, building mournful music with enough of the post-rock flavor to keep it interesting, but not enough that it turned me away.

So in summary, if you like post rock, and like violins and cellos, then you'll really enjoy giving this a chance.

Bootie Loves Whitney

Band / Artist:
Year: 2012
Genre: Mashup

My Review:
A Mashup cd of Whitney Houston. I guess this happens any time a pop star dies. I don't think I mind. A couple songs don't very directly use much Whitney, and some weren't the most amazing tracks to me, but its pretty good overall. I enjoyed it enough to keep it.

I've shown stuff from Bootie before, but it might have only been stuff from Bootie Rio. In either case, here is the website for the San Francisco branch of the global Bootie Mashup empire.

Hope you find the album enjoyable.

January! Free singles!

2013. Man.. WHY did I have to start you out by throwing up? It was like a nice send-off from 2012, reminding me once again, to suck it. Oh well. Here's some singles to pass the day. May they greatly please you, and not cause you to vomit.

Para Halu - Summer Solstice Mix 2011 (DJ set)

This came out a year and a half ago, but in my defense, I had no idea who this guy was till a little while ago. It's a good one for a run or some working music. I guess this would be fitting for your resolutions of getting thinner, stronger, or whatever.

Dj Lobsterdust - One More Diggity (Blackstreet vs. Maroon 5 vs.Gorillaz)

Bootie RIO doing what they do. Reminding me of how much good mashup work comes up all over the world every day.  Is it just me, or are gorrilaz getting seriously overplayed these days? I only see that from their first album though, and a pinch of their second. I wonder what that says about their album quality onward.

Hot Mouth (feat. Chris James) - Totally Worth It (Peacetreaty Remix)

Dancehall electro with a big pop-house vibe. I love good dancey techno, especially when I get to keep the track to play whenever I want. Dancing time in the kitchen.

Waves - Waves EP

Dreampop, Ambient Post-rock, Ambient techno. Somewhere in all of those is this short album. It has a sound that makes me wish there were some very soft, raw lyrics in an iron & wine style somewhere along the line.

And my last thing of today

Acrassicauda - Garden Of Stones

So they are good hard metal from Baghdad. They released this single as a promo for their whole album, and movie. I tried linking the video below, but in case it doesn't work, here's the site link.

Neutral Bling Hotel - In my G4 over da sea

Band/Artist: Psychosis
Year: 2012
Genre: Bastard Pop, Mashup
My Review:
There was a band back in the 90s called Neutral Milk Hotel (NMH) that made the album “In An Aeroplane Over the Sea ” in 1998. It was a sleeper hit with a fair cult following, and if ever you mention this band not being great in the presence of one of the followers, they'll call you a fool and a plebeian with no taste for music, or maybe threaten to kill you. (I'm moderately a fan, but I like other stuff far more.)

This album pays homage to it in the way that Dangermouse's Gray Album pays homage to Jay-Z and the Beatles. That, or it just bastardizes it over some hiphop. Personally I like it a lot more than the Gray Album, because the mix incorporates the vocals from the original songs throughout the mash, which always irked me about Dangermouse's work. Parts of it were pretty interesting, whereas a couple other parts fell a bit flat, which mostly depended on the rap track being used in each song.

So since there is a really intense love-or-hate thing going on around NMH and their music, it seems that this album is equally loved or hated so here are two reviews, one way, and the other.
Psychosis is another of the bastard pop musicians out there, but he hasn't done a whole lot yet. His first album is listed from here as well, but I didn't much care for it. Gotta start somewhere though, right?

Mos Dub

Band / Artist: Max Tannone
Year: 2010
Genre: Dub Reggae, Hip-hop, Mashup

My Review:
A set of mashups using dub reggae remixes and Mos Def tracks from mostly Mos Definite and Black On Both Sides. The man behind the album, DJ, Producer, Remixer, and all around white guy from New York, Max Tannone. He looks just like my friend Scott, who I lovingly nicknamed Skurt Burton, but I digress... play that funky music white boy.
Overall its a great album for not being too long, and not being too overbearing. Some mashup bands are just not meant for many places other than the dancefloor, and as much as I like a good night out dancing, I don't feel like that is the way most music should be enjoyed.

anyway, if you want to read more about the tracklistings, they are in a Readme with the download. enjoy!

Brutal Redneck - May 2012

Band/Artist: Brutal Redneck
Year: 2012
Genre: Mashup

My Review:
This one is a monthly mashup album to listen to by someone listed on the Bootie RIO. He (she? I have no idea) hails from ______ and makes a shorter album like this every month, as well as other theme albums. Its a good set of tracks, that are well mixed and make an unexpected presentation sometimes. Overall, Burtal Redneck isnt perfect yet, there are still some hiccups in making sure that the beats mesh together well, but this one was the best of them i heard so far.

My only qualm i have to say is that i'm getting tired of mashup artists using MIchael Jackson. If you really want to make something fresh, use his lesser known tracks, or maybe try some band that came and went with almost no notoriety, but a really solid sound. Oh well. This one was a good mashup set, and Brutal Redneck is so prolific that i couldn't help but subscribe to the blog to keep up with his progression.

Wugazi - 13 Chambers

Band / Artist: Wu-Gazi
Year: 2011
Genre: Mashup, Hip Hop, Punk, Bastard Pop

My Review:

This album is a mash-up of old Fugazi and Wu-tang clan. I love it, and definitely think that you might too. The guys behind it have started into some other projects that I haven't gotten to look at yet. Cecil Otter & Swiss Andy are their names. They are or have been involved in Doomtree, Porcelain Revolver, Field Guide, The Millionth Word, The Swiss Army, as well as their own solo albums.

You might have to go down the blog a bit to find the album. This album is really comfortable, and creative. It pretty much rocks (and raps... LOL PUN)

Bootie RIO - Ponderosa Mixtape

Band / Artist: Bootie RIO (Various artists)
Year: 2012
Genre: Mashup, Bastard Pop

My Review:

So first I'll just gloss over what a mashup is in case you've missed out. Take a handful of songs, and chop them up and blend them into one track. Some are just the vocal track from one song over the instrumental from another, some are remixeswith original material from the mashup artist, some are just insane layerings of 20 different songs that make something totally new.

This collection is a bunch of mashups out of souf amewica, this is just about the closest I ever get to listening to pop. Bootie has 3 different groups now that I know about, Rio, Germany, and the US. As with all of these, I listen through it, and decide which tracks I really want to keep, but if you’re ever throwing a party that will involve dancing, mashups are a perfect choice for the playlist.
