Pimpstrut Local #13 - Music For Film (Not Porn)

Band / Artist: Pimpstrut Local #13
Year: 2015
Genre: Funk, Soul-RnB, Alternative Pop,

My Review:
This is SO GOOD. Its like a Beck sound, and Parliament Funkadelic are crossed over each other. I love the hell out of it.

They have 3 releases, 2 of which are more EPs, and this one, which is more an LP. For real, I want to hear more from this band. I really like them a ton.

Go listen to this, I promise it's good.

The Impossebulls - The Devils You Know

Band / Artist: The Impossibulls
Year: 2016
Genre: Hip-Hop, Soul-RnB

My Review:
Here is the direct post info that came with this release. They have a great groove that seems to be falling to the wayside in rap and hip-hop these days. I hear plenty of Geto Boys and People Under the Stairs. I'm really liking it.

Today The Impossebulls return with their first album of all new material since 2014’s impressive “Everything Has Changed; Nothing Is Different”! The new album, “The Devils You Know” is another dope selection of joints that simultaneously take you back to that classic boom bap sound, while also remaining fresh and new.As with the previous album, The Bulls enlist a little help from good friends and legends… the most notable of which is one of the founding members of the great Stetsasonic and one of the most distinctive voices in hip-hop… Daddy-O! Of course that’s not all… the great Kyle Jason lends his voice to the album… as does the talented Anime Oscen. Last, but surely not least… our own The Honorable Sleaze drops a verse! This dope new album isn’t all, though… in the coming five months, The Bulls are dropping the 5x5 series of EPs. One each month featuring more new music! Also, very soon, fans will be able to purchase “Devil’s Work”… a limited edition box set containing the album and all five EPs, so fans don’t have to wait to get all that fresh music into their ears! We’ll let you know when that becomes available. For now… we hope you enjoy the new album.A very sincere thank you to The Impossebulls and all collaborators for delivering yet another underground / independent / netlabel hip-hop classic. Sleepers will sleep… those who are woke will hear it. blocSonic’s going to continue to wake ’em. Word.Of course, thanks once again to you for downloading & listening. We always strive to deliver the music you’ll love. Please spread the word about blocSonic, if you enjoy what we do. Remember… everything we release is cool to share! Always keep the music moving… share it… blog it… podcast it! If you’re in radio… support independent music and broadcast it!

I think they summed it up just fine. Good shit. Listen to it.

Singles Posts - Kitty Cash, K.Flay, Son Lux, Aesop Rock & Blockhead, SKOGSRÅ

Kitty Cash - Love The Free

A good mixtape that falls between glitchy Alt Pop and R&B. There are a lot of electronic influences in this, and it takes a song or two before it really gets rolling in my opinion. Once it gets going, I enjoyed it, except for the between-song sample that would remind you that Kitty Cash made the mixetape. Advice for all the mixers out there, if you need to remind people who made the set, then you are definitely doing something wrong.

K.Flay - Seen it all (Jake Bugg cover)

This one is a bit different from the usual K.Flay hippityhop. Its a softer, sadder, slower song, which is obviously going much more for the alt-pop sound of The Knife, which is fitting, since its about someone seeing a guy get knifed by a gang at a house party. I like this, but it sucks for the dude getting knifed.

Son Lux - Easy (Arandel Remix)

Speaking of The Knife, this song sounds a whole lot like stuff you might hear from them if they stayed on the path that "Silent Shout" and "Deep Cuts" were headed. This would be a soft track you would hear somewhere in the middle, and it is the kind that you grow to appreciate even more than the bigger tracks around it.

Aesop Rock & Blockhead - Try not to die

Ah, good ol' Aesop Rock. This one is an older b-side that he and Blockhead made in the early 2000s. If you like "Float" and "Appleseed" then you are getting a track you'll like.

SKOGSRÅ - Now You See Me

What a great track to round out the post with. This one is sort of poppy, and really vibrant, funky, and just overall good for grooving. In fact, I'd say this track sounds a LOT like newer stuff you hear from Daft Punk, and who the hell doesn't love that? Whats best, is that it stays interesting and pleasing for nearly 7 minutes. I really enjoy it.

Alright. Dance like nobody is watching. Have fun.

LIL KIDS - Slow Rainbow

Band / Artist:
Year: 2012
Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Soul-RnB, Bastard Pop, Alternative Hip-Hop, ?

My Review:
This is some odd, bastardy, nerdy, sarcastic alternative hiphop that came from Williamsburg, Virginia. The beatmaker goes by Lopato, and the MC, I never saw a specific name for. They've known each other since Middle school.

Its all kinds of easy listening, old funk, psychedelic rock, and old school hiphop blended into beats with a very "Laissez les bon temps roulez" sort of sound on one side, and a gritty, drunken, Don't-give-a-fuck sound on the other. The music isn't much about the self promotion, and it makes the MC look like a nerdyjerk, but in all the ways that your one total jerkface friend is fun to hang around.

If I could describe this music visually, it'd be like smeared, drippy, melty, moldy, rainbow sherbert colors with bits of dirt and glitter in it. Under a blacklight. The video does an alright job of describing it.

Apparently they have since moved to Brooklyn, where the MC complains about getting fat. I can't think of another hiphop set that sounds close enough to reference this, so watch the video, and if you like the music, you should give it a chance.

Free Singles - MORBIDTWATT, Myron & E, Andy Iona, Magnifico, K.Flay Feat. Felix Cartal

MORBIDTWATT

There was a funny-ish backstory to me finding this musician, but it wouldn't be in best service to him to tell it to you. Suffice it to say, art and life are rarely on the same level. He makes dark industrial music with a lot of techno influence, much of it utilizing string soundscapes. This is a link to all of his soundcloud tracks, as he offers them all up for free.

Myron & E - If I Gave You My Love

This is a soft, Motown-ish sort of track, that has a good amount of horns. It'd be good for dancing or.. ahem.. more private activities..

They do music with a group called  Soul Investigators, and the two just joined up to make a debut album on their new record label, Stones Throw. The new album is called Broadway, and it'll be out in July.

Andy Iona - Pretty Red Hibiscus & Naughty Hula Eyes

You know, that photo is just a tad creepy to me. Nevertheless, these songs are soft, melodic ukelele songs from long ago, which both are pleasing to listen to or to play for a significant other when you're being cute. Both of these fall into the public domain, as does most of his music I believe.

Andy Iona lived from 1902 to 1966, and mostle released music as "Andy Iona and his Islanders". He was noted as being one of Hawaii's most influential musicians, and somewhere out there is a boxed set of his work that has 112 tracks on it.

Magnifico - Ubic‡u Te

A guy from Yugoslavia. He's been getting big there, and has starred in a few Slovenian movies, as well as releasing a number of albums since 92. This track is from 2011.Its kind of like a cross of Latin dance (like salsa and such) with a bit of dub effects, and a few flares of that eastern European horn playing that I've started to notice is common. Its pretty great, even though I have no idea what he's saying.

K.Flay Feat. Felix Cartal - Rest Your Mind

You know where this is going. Its dancey technoish hiphop. This time there was a long backstory. Here it goes...

..and thats it. I like this one more than some of the softer stuff. It makes me wiggle my ass.

Poetic Death - Darcia

Band / Artist: Poetic Death
Year: 2012
Genre: Hip-Hop

My Review:
Some pretty nice garage hip-hop by Chad Marshall. The dark cover doesn't hint to how smooth and emotive parts of the album feel. Here's his website.

http://www.poeticdeath.com/#243/custom_plain

One thing I always disliked about hip-hop and rap is that it rarely talks about anything. Music should always do something for the mind, and not just tickle the “Food, fighting, and fucking” part of the id.

The album rides along a tone of nostalgia for a lost lover in the aftermath of a huge breakup. I recommend it if you're a fan of R&B or would be, its a humble, underrated album with a lot to offer.

Harbour City Electric - Without a sound

Band / Artist: Harbour City Electric
Year: 2010
Genre: Funk, Psychedelic Rock, R&B, Soul

My Review:
I've had this album in my chest of things that I need to post for at least 6 months. It figures I would wait long enough to be beaten to the punch by my brothers-in-groove at Moosick Revoos.

Harbour City Electric is a live seven-piece band from Wellington, New Zealand.

Here's their members...
Simon Koziarski (guitar),
Paddy Bleakley (bass),
Ned Worboys (vocals),
Shaun Elley (drums),
Lex French (trumpet),
Richard Shirley (trombone),
Ed Zuccollo (keyboards)

And here's a quote about them.
Throwing synthesizers, tight horns, a kicking rhythm section and world-class vocals into the mix, Harbour City Electric have crafted their own unique style, which can only be described as Acid-funk and heavy break-beat soul.

This is rockin. It's such a rich sound, with flavors of Motown R&B, and jazzy psychedelic rock. Its a VERY good album that I'm proud to showcase, because it fits so well between the gaps I've had in my own collection.

Raw Music International - Kisumu Mixtape

Band / Artist: Raw Music International (Various Artists)
Year: 2011
Genre:  International, Blues, Soul-RnB, Folk, Hip-Hop, Field Recordings, African, Alternative Hip-Hop, Dance, Reggae - Dancehall, Hip-Hop Beats

My Review:
A "mixtape" of tracks from Kisumu, Kenya. It has a pretty wide range of sounds, from traditional Kenyan folk, to pop and rap, and some instrumental pieces.  I played through it a few times and found probably 2 tracks that rubbed me the wrong way and I didn't keep.

If you want to know a little about each track, go check out the bandcamp page and click through each track.  this is the excerpt for the first song

Olima is an 83 year old blind Luo blues guitarist. We recorded this song at his home on December 31, 2010. He sings in memory of a deceased lover.

This one is a good one for a mix, and adds a nice dimension of flavor into a playlist. It would be nice in a mix for at a summery BBQ or a dinner party.
